Women across the world have found ingenious ways to manage unwanted facial hair and many of these methods find historical significance. With the rapid advances in science and technology ways to manage unwanted facial hair have also benefited in the form of laser hair removal and electrolysis.

Ways to manage unwanted facial hair
Contemporary Methods
1. Laser hair removal uses laser energy to kill hair follicles. This method is based on scientific principle that darker colors absorb light while lighter ones reflect it. So when the laser is focused on unwanted facial hair it affects only the hair follicles and not the skin. This method promises nearly permanent hair removal with minimum discomfort. A minimum of 3 sittings are required as at a time only three fourths of your hair grows. Also laser hair removal treatments have to be spaced apart by a month each time.
2. Electrolysis involves insertion of a fine needle into the hair follicle and charging it to kill it. Since it is not entirely certain if a new cell will grow in place of the dead one the process needs to be repeated.

Traditional Methods
1. Waxing facial hair with specially designed and created facial wax strips removes the hair from the root. Thus you are assured of a few weeks on hairless skin. This process finds it root in Egypt and its surrounding areas. In fact a bride from that area is waxed clean and only the hair on her head and eyebrows is left. There are two types of waxes, hot and cold. As the name suggests one needs to be warmed before use while the other can be used straight away. Hot wax was first used in Australia in the 1980s and is found to be more affective as the warmth of the wax makes the process easier.
2. Threading utilizes thread that is laced into the fingers and the facial hair trapped between it and then pulled out. Though a bit painful it is particularly useful in areas such as the eyebrows where you want to only remove a certain amount of hair. The discomfort caused is easily treated by icing the area.
3. Tweezing requires the use of tweezers to remove the unwanted hair. Though a slow process like threading it is useful in areas where only a limited amount of facial hair is to be removed. Electronic tweezers have not made the process of facial hair removal faster and more convenient.
4. Bleaching is not a method of hair removal but is still one of the ways to manage unwanted hair. The process uses chemicals to lighten the hair and make it merge with the facial skin. So while the hair remains on the face it is still not seen. It is vital to test the skin for sensitivity to the bleach before applying it.
