Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Greg Mauro

Laser hair removal can be quite a complicated procedure. Having a background on the topic before seeking consultation can help you select the correct method and specialist.

The Greeks did it, so did the Indians and the Mesopotamians. From time immemorial women and men have been making attempts at removing unwanted hair from various parts of their bodies. Unfortunately most of the traditional forms of hair removal such waxing, threading, shaving or use of hair removal creams are either painful or remove the hair for a very short period of time. With advances in modern science and cosmetology hair removal has been revolutionized by laser hair removal treatment.

What is Laser Hair Removal Treatment?

In laser hair removal treatment laser beams are used to damage the hair follicles, thereby stunting their growth for a while. How well the hair has been removed depends on the number of laser hair removal treatments performed on it. The science behind laser hair removal treatment is that light is absorbed by dark colors and reflected by light ones. When a laser beam is used for hair removal it is aimed at the hair follicles which being darker absorbs the laser energy whilst the skin, which is lighter does not absorb the light. The follicles absorb energy till they finally die and thus no more hair grows from it. If hair does return over a period of time it is usually lighter and thinner and would require another sitting of the laser hair removal treatment. Usually the area from where the hair is to be removed is shaved and cleansed and a mild anesthetic may be applied. A carbon lotion may also be used to assist in stopping hair growth. There is mild discomfort associated with this treatment and is easily treated with ice after the laser hair removal treatment is over. There may be some amount of temporary discoloration after the treatment.

Laser hair removal treatment is performed by a qualified technician or nurse using reputed and recognized devices at a laser hair removal center or clinic. Most states in the United States of America require the treatment to be supervised by a doctor. Some of the lasers used for this treatment include Q-switched Nd:Yag and the diode laser. The amount of time required for a single sitting of laser hair removal treatment is dependent on the amount of area being treated and the coarseness of the hair. Since only three fourths of a person’s hair grows at a time it is vital that more than one sitting be carried. Usually three sittings are required and they need to be spaced out with a month between each laser hair removal treatment.

Who can get laser hair removal treatment?
Since the basic scientific principle of laser hair removal requires that the hair color be darker than the skin extremely dark pigmented people are not ideal candidates for this treatment. However the area to be affected may be bleached in advance so that the person benefits the most from the treatment. If you have light hair and are well tanned laser hair removal may not be suitable for you. Interestingly laser hair removal treatment is found to be more effective with black hair and also with coarse hair. For permanent hair removal more time needs to be dedicated for laser hair removal treatments that need to be spaced out.

Risks in laser hair removal treatment
While the treatment itself is extremely safe it is vital that you adhere by the cosmetic surgeon’s instructions and advice. Discoloration of skin may occur in very few cases and is temporary. It is also vital that you go to a renowned laser hair removal clinic.

Cost of laser hair removal treatment
The cost varies from region to region and also on the cosmetic practitioner. Furthermore the costing of the treatment would also depend on you and your skin and the number of sittings required. And finally of course the price of laser hair removal treatment will be based on the amount of area from which the hair needs to be removed. Laser hair removal treatment can generally cost you anywhere $100 to $500 per sitting
